Clarity
The world was full of mirrors.
She used them all with the fervor of a fox hunting a rabbit. She was a beast of consumption, devouring reflections daily.
First, there was her mother. In her, she saw her dimples, her button nose, her widow's peak. In her, she saw her anxiety and judgment. In her, there was shame and concealment. A pinching at the waist, a thirst never quenched.
So she moved on to the next mirror.
At first, she saw only beauty. His mirror was hazy with lust. Deep breaths, hurried hands, and a fixation on being what he wanted. Giggles spilled out of that tight place at the top of her throat like champagne. In this mirror, she constantly shifted to continue being what he craved. But his hunger was equal to her own. They consumed each other until there was nothing left but a withered being that crept out of his flat in the middle of the night.
The rain-soaked streets filled her shoes with water. She looked down to avoid treading further into the gathering pools and instead caught sight of her reflection.
In this mirror, alone with nothing but the moon and the rain and the night air, she had clarity.
