Cage

He examined the cage he had built.

It was a messy sight. Sinew wrapped tightly around bone shards. Sun-dried clay at the joints. A variety of ornamental grasses covered the ground inside where she lay.

She was sleeping, after many hours of watching him through the bars. Her doe-like gaze had been unwavering, carefully scrutinizing his every movement.

This was why he had to be careful. He took very little action when she was awake, mindful not to give anything away. Nothing that she could use against him.

He thought of his prisoner as “she” even though he couldn’t be sure. It was the eyes, brown and wide, that made him think this. There was a certain adoration he felt when he looked into them, as if she held a mutual respect for him locked behind her irises. There was empathy there and soon he no longer worried about her betraying him.

It was her gentle nature that was her greatest strength. Her softness lured him in. The cage he’d built was big enough for two lying down. Her supple frame stretched and molded to fit, resilient to his rigid form.

When she stretched out, her limbs gaining purchase, she stood.

Her tenderness was how she made her escape.
